Purpose And Significance Of My Action Research Project

My action research project is: Discipline and its Impact in Academic Achievement

Purpose
To determine if student behavior is a factor of mediocre academic achievement.

What I will do: I will investigate the amount of teacher discipline referrals. They will be sorted by offense and each offense will be plotted in a chart. I will also identify the "frequent fliers" or students that are consistently violating the code of conduct. I will then investigate what kind of grades those students have in every assessment, and what kind of grades teachers assign for projects, homework , class participation, etc. I will analyze the referrals to determine if some of those are a consequence of the teacher's poor classroom management skills. I will investigate the socioeconomic and emotional conditions of those students.

Significance

This action research project will help us in determining the causes of the three major contributors to the universe of violations to the student code of conduct; it will also help us in eliminating or reducing those offenses by providing the student with the tools to improve their behavior in the form of motivation, mentoring, counseling, placement in a different classroom, any direct intervention that the student may benefit from, or any other action that may seem pertinent for each individual case. Lastly, if student behavior is a factor to improve the academic achievement, it will be reflected in the students' performance after all these efforts have been implemented.

I believe my action research project is reasonable and feasible, I also think that it complies with the ethical guidelines of our district, and those of the Texas Education Agency.
